Marzia Matarese (Naples, 1989) is a visual artist, mycophile, and microlandscaper. Their work unfolds through methodological dis/orientations and processes that intertwine speculative fiction with visual, performative, and affective practices, with the aim of fostering alliances and kinships beyond the human. Their research materializes across multiple media, including video, photography, installation, performance, and the use of cultivation media. As part of Arquea Colectivo, they explore hybrid formats that combine experimental video, microlandscaping, and expanded cinema.
Their work examines the intricate relationships between the organic, inorganic, and artificial realms, seeking to configure a speculative cosmo-technique and to design embodied strategies that deviate from human exceptionalism, opening space for post-natural, queer, and more-than-human ecologies. Within this process, they draw on the construction of an expanded kinship that includes other biological beings and geological entities. They are interested in analyzing the transformative capacity of languages as tools for world-making, weaving bonds, and dismantling power structures.
Through their practice, they seek to materialize strategies for inhabiting the limits of these languages: their cracks, inconsistencies, failures, and frictions. Their research interrogates the concepts of transformation and affect, inviting a reconsideration of our relationship with the ecosystems we inhabit. They examine interactions between organisms and environments, creating narratives that challenge normativizing structures that seek to determine our ecological and existential realities.
They have presented their work in international exhibitions such as In/Visible Signals: Cold Fire at Rad Myco7, Mulino, Oregon (09/24); Nakusaka, la dueña del barro at the Weilbauer Museum / PUCE, Quito (09/23); and, together with Arquea Colectivo, Diálogos Cuerpo-Hábitat at the Reinventer son monde festival in Orléans, France (10/23). In 2022, they participated in the exhibition La tradició que ens travessa at Arts Santa Mònica, Barcelona, with the project Membranas Zombies (together with the collective Muaj!).
Their performances with Arquea Colectivo have been presented at major events, including the Eufònic Festival (Ebro Delta, 2021), Entropía (Etopia, 2022), Rarefacció (Hangar, 2022), L’Alternativa Festival (CCCB, 2022), the ECOSS Ecosistemes de l’Inesperat festival (Fabra i Coats, 2023), and Semillero contra el Apocalipsis (CaixaForum, 2023).
In 2020, they participated in the creation of eemeemee (Enclave Micopirata Mutante), a network dedicated to the exchange of processes and knowledge around DIWO mycology (Do It With Others).
They are part of the Grupo de Estudios sobre Tecnologías Torcidas, an autonomous research and experimentation group focused on the concept of “deviated” technologies. These are configured as a queer torsion of technology, aimed at creating devices that poetically seek to materialize intra- and inter-active relations between human and more-than-human entities, oriented toward the production of interspecies intimacy and cosmopolitical practice.
